Lead with an executive message
Boards need to understand the overall direction before exploring detail. Summarise material changes in performance, cash and risk, and identify matters requiring discussion or approval. Keep the summary consistent with the analysis supporting it.
Choose indicators connected to strategy
More indicators do not necessarily create more clarity. Select a balanced set reflecting company objectives and standardise definitions, sources and update frequency. Trends, targets and comparisons help put each number in context.
Make the required decision explicit
For matters requiring a decision, explain the options, assumptions and expected funding and risk implications. Distinguish confirmed information from estimates and record agreed actions so implementation can be reviewed at the next meeting.
